All major carriers stop shipments to/from Odessa in wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

In wake of the unprecedented and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces on Thursday, Feb 24, 2022, Ukraine’s military has suspended commercial shipping at its ports. This is one of the biggest attacks by one country against another in Europe since World War II. Russia too suspended the movement of commercial vessels in the Azov Sea until further notice.

Below is a summary of the communication shared by major carriers for quick reference.

CMA CGM update:

  • The BEX and BSMAR services will omit Odessa, Ukraine.
  • Bookings to and from Odessa are suspended.
  • The floating cargo to Ukraine will be redirected to the ports of Constanza (Romania), Tripoli (Lebanon), or Piraeus (Greece).

MSC update:

  • Stopped accepting new bookings for cargo to/from Ukraine.
  • The container ship MSC JESSENIA R deviated during voyage XA207A and the vessel will omit its call to Odessa.
  • For the time being MSC ships will not call at Ukrainian ports and they are implementing various other operational changes to other vessels in the region to make use of their wide Black Sea port network.
  • In such cases, MSC will declare the voyage as ended in the last port prior to Ukraine.
